HERITAGE FARM ALPACAS

Valuing the past, breeding for the future is the mission on Heritage Farm. We are a small alpaca farm in North Central Indiana that takes pride in our rural heritage as we specialize in breeding high quality suri alpacas with the goal of continuous herd improvement.

Getting Started with Alpacas

Getting started with alpacas starts with good homework. Visit several farms. Ask questions. Watch how chores get done. Learn about feeding, fencing, shelter, and basic health care. Read books and trusted online resources. Spend time with breeders who live this work every day.

The Alpaca Owners Association, AOA, stands as a great place to begin. Their website, events, and breeder directory point you to solid information and experienced people. The right mentors save you from costly mistakes and help you build a strong foundation. Reputable breeders welcome visitors, explain their choices, and stand behind the animals they sell.

Before you buy your first alpacas, slow down and learn. Compare farms. See different setups. Notice how animals look and behave. Ask about records, breeding goals, and fiber use. This step shapes your success more than any single purchase.

To help you sort it all out, we created the Alpaca Getting Started Guide. It walks you through the process step by step, from early research to bringing your first alpacas home. It pulls together what we have learned over more than twenty years at Heritage Farm, so you start with clear expectations, smart questions, and a plan that works.

This series will be sent to you via a series of emails andgives you a clear path forward.

You will learn:

  • What it takes to care for alpacas day to day.

  • What kind of land, shelter, and fencing works best.

  • What feed, health care, and routine costs look like.

  • The difference between pets, fiber animals, and breeding stock.

  • How goals should shape what you buy.

  • What new owners often get wrong and how to avoid it.
